Life in Christ: A Manual for Disciples
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (January, 1986)
Authors: Tony Salerno, Gabriel Arosemena, and Steve Harrison
Average review score:

A doctrinally-solid Christian study workbook
"Life in Christ" has been on the market for a long time. In terms of Christian books that usually says good things about the quality of the work.

Billed as "A Manual for Disciples", this workbook is a very thorough examination of all aspects and disciplines of the Christian life. Its nearly three hundred page length attests to the breadth of material that is covered. Topics such as knowing God, prayer, the Bible, The Holy Spirit, Christ, testing of one's faith, and evangelism make up just a few of the areas covered.

Each chapter follows a topical study that has a short passage of the Bible to read with a question or two afterward about the passage. There are sidebars that explain some concepts as well as stories by Christian figures. Opportunities are presented for journaling and Scripture memory.

The sidebars are especially enlightening and cull from some of the greatest Christian writers and preachers. The assemblage of thought here is splendid. You hear from the likes of Leonard Ravenhill, Billy Sunday, D.L. Moody, R.A.Torrey, J.I. Packer, Charles Spurgeon, Vance Havner, George MacDonald, and others. That list should give you a feel for where this manual is coming from doctrinally. Frankly, I think it is superb in this regard.

It is also worthy to note that this workbook is absolutely filled with superb engravings from artists such as Gustav Dore. The illustrations give the book a serious feel and help to highlight the profundity of the material covered. Never have I seen a book of this type so well illustrated. A delight for the eyes as well as the soul!

If I have any problems with the material it is that it has a tendency to ask questions that require only simple responses. While there are many thought-provoking questions and sections, a few don't really delve that deeply. If you intend to use this as a guide for a group, take time to unpack some of the questions a bit more for best results.

Let me end this review by saying that I've used this workbook with new Christians and it has brought excellent results. You would not go wrong in considering it for your discipleship materials.

best discipleship manuel
I find Tony Salerno's "Life in Christ" discipleship manuel to be the best I've ever found and I've used it the past 15 years or more as a foundational text for teaching the basics of the faith especially to new coverts. I've required anyone who aspires to our church leadership to go thru this material with me one-on-one as a prerequisite. [This is part of building unity of faith within our church.] I even made up a "final exam" based on this manuel for each student who would complete "discipleship." If there is a better discipleship manuel out there in Christiandom, I sure would like to know. I do supplement this manuel with my own teaching but the framework provided to hang my own stuff is just excellent. There's 10 chapters each dealing with a specific topic; I think Salerno picked the 10 most essential for the "basic" Christian. Bible doctrine could be "dry" but Salerno has good illustrations, pictures and anecdotes, so I find what is taught is interesting and edifying. I don't find the "extremes or distinctives" of varied denominations taught here; all teachings seem to be very basic and biblically grounded. My own personal preference would be for the manuel to use the NIV (New International Version) rather that the KJV (King James Version). Students need to write their response to questions in the manuel and all my students uses the NIV--for easier, better understanding of the Holy Scripture. But other than that, anyone going thru this manuel with the right attitude will be well on their way to becoming a solid disciple of Christ.

Discipling tool!
"Life in Christ" is a wondeful discipling tool for communicating the basic Christian doctrines with a new believer. This text guides a new believer in exploring and studying the Scripture, realizing they have a testimony and encouraging them to witness. My husband and I went through this study about six months after our conversion and were blessed by its thoroughness. The artwork throughout the pages is beautiful.

M.D.: One Doctor's Adventures Among the Famous and Infamous from the Jungles of Panama to a Park Avenue Practice
Published in Hardcover by Ballantine Books (Trd) (March, 1990)
Authors: B. H. Kean and Tracy Dahlby
Average review score:

worth reading
This book details the doctor's life through his training, life-long interest in parasitology, Panama, Park Avenue practice, treatment of the Shah, etc. It is a well-written and fascinating book, told with humor. He's not afraid to tell of his times of inexperience, weakness, and mistakes.

Great humor...
Kean is an excellent writer for a doctor... the book flowed very well and never got boring or tedious, despite the fact he was presenting a lot of medical evidence... Great read for anyone interested in infectious diseases or how medicine and politics can get tangled.

Medical Detective
The author is a parasitologist, who had a fascinating career. I love medical detective books of all kinds, fiction and non-fiction - this is the best I have read.

Novell's LDAP Developer's Guide (With CD-ROM)
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (15 January, 2000)
Authors: Roger G. Harrison, Jim Sermersheim, and Steve Trottier
Average review score:

An indepth look at LDAP and Novell's LDAP implementation
Novell's LDAP Developer's Guide, provides a wealth of information on the Novell's Implementation of LDAP including the details of utilizing Novell's NDS through their LDAP implementation. But better still are the discussions and use of the LDAP itself. This book is packed with useful a example such as the chapter on Searching, which is very comprehensive, the best I've seen. The book covers all aspects of LDAP from Schema, Simple Binding, to the latest in DirXML work. The authors have organized the book quick well and filled it with clear and detailed explanations, and working examples. When reading this book you not only get an understanding of Novell's Implementation of LDAP but much much more! This book is a good reference for both Novell's LDAP but also LDAP in general knowledge

An excellent book, and great introduction to LDAP
This is honestly one of the best computer books I have read. The authors have an informal style that is also very precise, and they're able to cover a lot of information in a very short time.

Although the book emphasises Novell's eDirectory, and many chapters are about configuring and running LDAP services on eDirectory, the LDAP concepts are valid for any LDAP server, and the code is written to work in C or Java on many platforms and with many SDKs. If you're not an eDirectory user, you may want to become one after reading this book.

I strongly recommend this as a primary resource for any LDAP developer, and for eDirectory systems administrators and developers in particular.

Great resource for information about LDAP.
I have read several LDAP books and I have found this one to be the most clear with some of the best examples. No matter which LDAP directory you are using!

It is a must have for anyone who is using or evaluating Novell's eDirectory or NDS.

The sections on LDIF and schema have saved me alot of time and I constantly refer to them. I have been referring everyone with LDAP questions to this book.

The Shooting of Dan McGrew
Published in Paperback by David R Godine (November, 1995)
Authors: Ted Harrison and Robert William Service
Average review score:

Awesome!
This was my grandfather's favorite poem--he used to recite it from memory. I can still hear his hushed, suspenseful tone as he told the tale of the strange miner, the dangerous gun fighter, and "the lady that was known as Lou." When I found this illustrated copy, I was floored--Ted Harrison perfectly captured this eerie story. I had to buy a second copy for my mom!!

Canadian Classic
With Ted Harrison's illustrations, this classic poem comes alive. Whether its read as a children's introduction to poetry or just for fun, this is a book to own. "Were you ever out in the Great Alone?" Probably not -but this book can get you close.

Art work in this book is phenomenal!
The poem is great to begin with, but coupled with the pictures, "formidable!" Each page could be clipped out and framed on its own merits.

Forests: The Shadow of Civilization
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (May, 1992)
Author: Robert Pogue Harrison
Average review score:

Link between culture and action by society?
Harrison explains that he is writing a "a physic history from which empirical history derives its inspiration." It is a history of the place of forests in the western psyche. For example, Harrison writes, "But why should forests haunt the mind like some mystical dream or nightmare that every now and then spreads its long, prehisotrical shadows over the ordinary clarity of things modern? On the basis of what "data of prehistory,"...does the forest become dense with associations and monstrous fears?"

His meta narrative is as follows: "Civilization define[s] itself at the outset over and against the forests." There has always been an antagonism between human culture centers and forests. Forests are a huge part of today's cultural memory.

His method is to scan works of culture, namely literature, for expressions of an attitude towards forests. His "ages" include your basic Greeks, Romans, medieval, Renaissance/humanism, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernity.

Criticisms: Frequently looks at a bit of literature and concludes "forests were..." or "forests were becoming..." Harrison doesn't make explicit to whom they were "becoming..." That is, he is not too critical about the authors of his sources or the nature of their audiences. Did the limited reading audiences cut down the trees? If not, what were the concrete mechanisms of deforestation? He writes, here is the attitude, then, here is the scope of deforestation, there's no connection in between.
Harrison also has little respect for chronology; for example, Moses becomes an example of the medieval mindset.

Beautiful and impressive, but quite a reading to tackle
I was assigned portions of "Forests" for a research writing class. The writing is just beautiful; the work as a whole is nearly overwhelming. The discussion on Walden in the fifth chapter is not to be missed. Overall an incredible example of literary criticism, almost out of place among current literature, but much welcomed and thoroughly appreciated.

luminous
My old Cambridge tutor said that the only works of modern literary criticism he'd sell his shirt for were *Seven Types of Ambiguity* and *The Wheel of Fire*. For a long time I agreed. Then I read *Forests*. It is quite simply the most profound, the most moving, the best-written, the most important work of literary criticism of the late twentieth century.

Harrison Fisher: Defining the American Beauty: With Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors and Designers.)
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (January, 1999)
Authors: Tina Skinner, Bruce Magnotti, and Harrison Fisher
Average review score:

Good, But Not the Best, Resource on Harrison Fisher
I am a devotee of Harrison Fisher.

This will certainly be one of the books you will want to add to your reference section on Harrison Fisher, but it's not the best.

Some of the shortcomings for this book are:
1) It does not come in hardcover
2) Too many of the illustrations are in black & white
3) Many of the illustrations are not named and/or the source is not given.
4) Many of the pages are cluttered with too many illustrations which are pictured too small.

Naomi Welch's "The Complete Works of Harrison Fisher" is the superior reference on Harrison Fisher's works. Welch's biography on Harrison Fisher is more extensive; the bio in this one is disappointing.

However, so few reference works exist on Harrison Fisher that there should be room on your bookshelf for this one. It has a nice length, good number of illustrations, and it's more inexpensive than "The Complete Works".
It has satisfactory coverage of Fisher's illustrations.

A Great Primer for Harrison Fisher's Art
This profusely illustrated book is a great companion for the collector of Harrison Fisher's work or Edwardian graphics. Devotees of turn of the century costume will also find a wealth of source material in this book. Well written and researched, this is a great primer for the beginning collector.

Decorating Artwork
IF you find that you are buying the popular Victorian Ladies note cards and collecting antique victorian ladies prints, then you will love this book. I found all the ladies that I collected over the years plus a whole lot of others. Plus Amozon's prices is much cheaper than other companies Fisher Victorian Ladies books.

John Toland's Christianity Not Mysterious: Text, Associated Works and Critical Essays
Published in Paperback by Dufour Editions (01 January, 1997)
Authors: John Toland, Alan Harrison, Richard Kearney, and Philip McGuinness
Average review score:

Between the lines
Toland's oft-cited Deistical work reads as apologetic rather than truly controversial. The actual rhetorical attacks on Christianity are found not in what Toland says, but rather what he doesn't. Toland frequently sets up strong, reason-based objections to fundamentally held religious "truths" only to excuse them with deliberately weak responses. The burden of truth carefully remains with the defenders of revelation and is never realized in this debate Toland pretends to have with himself.
Other than the occasional questioning of clerical interpretations (Toland frequently expounds a commonly held truism and after defending it philosophically on it's own "merits" he often adds at the end, as if to paralyze the Church with indecision regarding his infidelity, "if it be true.") he pretends agreement with the Church in nearly every doctrinal detail.
In this pre-pantheist dissertation, Toland's words are nearly silent with respect to a true rebellion against the established dogma of the Church, but the unwritten screams to a deafening crescendo for an immediate ascension to unrevealed reason.
With cunning and an apparently insatiable appetite for controversy, Toland does a marvelous job of appearing to walk the literary fence dividing the heathens from the faithful. But an occasional glace between the lines will leave no doubt as to where he truly stood.

From a born-again Deist...
An excellent book! The most wonderful fact is that it was written in the time when people were killing for religion. I am not sure how sensational this book would be if it were written in the 20-th century when people stopped assigning such great significance to religion, but for his time and place (especially Ireland!) a man had to be really brave to write something as contraversial as this.

A concise way to show the Irish enlightement
The book focuses on the famous Toland work "Christianity Not Mysterious". Toland tried, in his opinion, to clean the Christianity of all strange elements that destroy his original purpose. Toland thank that the correct way to realize his purpose was the strictly use of reason. But Toland, at the same time, reflects a strong rationalism, if we use a common expression in philosophy of religion, that cause an enormous opposition of the stablished Church in Ireland. The book also contains another texts that complement that work. The big merit of this publication is to put in only one book some critical views, that gives unity to it. I think is higly recommended for persons that want to study seriously the English deism.

Nuevo Latino: Recipes That Celebrate the New Latin American Cuisine
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (May, 2002)
Authors: Douglas Rodriguez, John Harrison, and Dennis Galante
Average review score:

Exquisite flavors
Rodriguez is an excellent chef and a great cookbook writer. I bought this after eating a couple of meals in one of his newer restaurants in NYC, Chicama, where the creative ceviches, oyster appetizers and other dishes are absolutely out of this world. Combining unlikely flavors to create new versions of Latin American standards, this book contains many recipes you will want to make over and over. Only challenges: some ingredients are hard to find, and most of the recipes take a little extra preparation. Small price to pay for uncommonly good food.

Checked it out of the library, now I'm buying it!
We've just returned from a Caribbean cruise with its final destination in Costa Rica. We were inspired by the diversity of the flavors and food presentation everywhere we visited...so inspired we decided to come home and have a New Year's Latino brunch for friends and neighbors. So, our local library had Nuevo Latino on the shelf and we were on! Douglas Rodriguez' book is well written so that it tells an interesting story of his career journey, and it presents recipes, definitions of ingredients, and presentation ideas in a practical and easy-to-replicate way. Now, even the trips to the grocery store with all these new "foreign" foods in the produce section conjure up memories/ideas from the recipes he's presented. Can't wait to go to New York to experience Patria, but also know that what we made from his book was excellent. Our friends thought we were great cooks! And that's the point of cookbooks, isn't it! Thanks to Nuevo Latino.

Gets Your Mojo and Adobo Sizzlin'
Is this cool way of cookin?! I'm totally impressed by the style and excitement of this style of cuisine, full of marinades (adobo in Spanish, both dry rub and liquid), and that hot/cool tension of Latino food.

With tropical fruits and Latino veggies and tubers (malanga, yuca, etc) this introduces most of us to an exciting whole new venue of possibilities.

It's all here, drink suggestions and Breads (you've got to try the Yellow Arepas, they're worth the book itself). Amazing array of salsas and mojos, such as Ruby Grapefruit, Shallot and Cilantro Mojo (unblievable flavors).

The offerings here are spectacular, Grilled Flank Steak over Mushroom Ceviche. Who would have thought of that, ceviche applied to small button mushrooms which this guy found in Peruvia through his dad's barber.

Knockout dishes like Original Plantain Coated Mahimahi served with Tamarind Tartar Sauce. Avocado and Pistachio Crusted Gulf Snapper with Black Bean Sauce. Sugarcane Tuna with Malanga Puree and Dried Shrimp Salsa. Mango and Mustard-Glazed Salmon with Calamari Rice.

This review could continue to speak of creative dish after dish. Desserts are equally attractive, with fruit and flans and rice and a neat dish to dazzle your guests from Cuba, Brazo Park Avenue with Banana Mousse.

All nicely packaged by one of the best, Ten Speed Press, with class and style, color photos and rich, vibrant text.

My frontrunner for Latino cooking resource.

Prayer
Published in Paperback by Ignatius Press (September, 1986)
Authors: Hans Urs Von Balthasar and Graham Harrison
Average review score:

Way over my head!
I was very much looking forward to Prayer by Hans Urs von Balthasar. While I grew up in the Christian tradition, my particular flavor did not practice contemplative prayer. So, I was looking to expand my horizons. This book came to me highly recommended. However, I must tell the readers of this review that this in no introductory text on prayer. It is nowhere near easy reading.

The book is well written, that is certain. It is as much a systematic theology as it is a book on prayer. I graduated from seminary with a Master of Divinity and still found this book to be dense reading. Balthasar is no foreigner to philosophy and uses the language of philosophy generously. In fact, I found him hard to follow at times.

I am glad that I read this book. I value any insight I can gain to grow in my own prayer pilgrimage. But, be forewarned, this is no easy read on prayer. I hope to find a better introduction to contemplative prayer.

Like drinking cool, spring water on a hot day.
This book is refreshing. Deep down refreshing. Balthasar is one of those rare theologians that could write beautifully. Every sentence is like a rare jewel. I read this book slowly and savored every single thought.

a masterpiece.
The late h.u. von balthazar, the theologian du juer of the vatican was a brilliant, cultured theological giant, and also a man of deep and profound prayer.{do not let the fact that von balthazar has been co-opted by reactionaries daunt you. he is infinitely rewarding.}This book, divided into 3 sections;the act of contemplation;the object of contemplation andthe tensions of contemplation.though von balthazar can be dense and at times obtuse, this book is rich, the prose clear and at times, poetic, befitting its subject. This book is qiute literally a lifetime companion, for i believe it contains all of von Balthazar's wisdom, eriudition, and holiness[which is ,of course, a subjective thing.]Well, well worth the effort. As an aside, the publishers have done a commendable job with the presentation of this book. The binding is excellent, the pages themselves of fine qulaity. well done all around
